On the subject of war based documentaries, McCullin is another great one.

King of Kong is still up there as one of my all time favourites. Unexpectedly brilliant.

Restrepo is quality. Book and photo book that go with it are also quality.

Nice one defjam - my 30 day free trial ends tomorrow, so I'll give this a watch tonight.

Think Netflix pisses over amazon prime at the moment but if amazon starts adding more decent documentaries then I might give it another go.

Hardly watch tv now and could probably go without having freeview/sky tbh. Even great stuff like planet earth eventually shows up on Netflix.

one great doc everyone should watch is Restrepo from 2010, it features photographer Tim Hetherington and his experiences taking pictures during the Afghanistan war

a year after the film's release Tim was killed by shrapnel from a mortar shell while covering the 2011 Libyan civil war

Re: If you watch one Docu this year it has to be 'Off the Rails'
I watched 13th the other day and it's rather disturbing, there are some serious flaws regarding how the USA treats incarceration of blacks and to a lesser extent the poor with plea bargaining due to the prison system largely being privatised and influencing state legislation by introducing bills through ELEC, the sentencing system is extreme and is weighted in favour of the Justice system, you wouldn't want to get nicked in the States

The only issued I had is that the narrative is very biased and selective in parts and should've had more moderate voices from the Black Movement other than those linked with Nation of Islam

Thanks for the heads up on Off The Rails D, I'll take a butchers next week

I wasn't sure about the scientology movie - not being able to get really close to any active scientologists hampered it somewhat. Still enjoyable though.

Just spotted that 'Zero Days' is on Amazon prime - release date tomorrow. Sounds dark enough for me to consider watching.

Re: If you watch one Docu this year it has to be 'Off the Rails'
Excellent Defjam, I think good documentaries are my faves these days....Another couple of recommendations for anyone who likes documentaries :

Louis Theroux Documentary on Scientology.

The Fall - Sky Atlantic. Doc about Zola Budd and Mary Decker in the Olympic Final in 1984. Fascinating because at the time I was just a kid watching an Olympic Final. I didn't know all the background of the two and poor Zola was on a hiding to nothing really. Well worth a watch.

And it sounds a bit boring and probably showing I am getting old but some of the Chris Tarrant Extreme Railways series are quite fascinating. Puts Southern to shame!!!

Cheers for that - will check it out.

Another good documentary on Prime is Precinct Seven Five. A true tale of large scale police corruption in New York.
